Perpetual Denial of Evidence and Cognitive Dissonance

PseudoSkeptics are always saying, "There's no evidence for any paranormal or psychic phenomena" no matter how much
evidence is shown to them. That's because this statement is a religion
to them, not an objective statement. So no matter what evidence you give
them, they will always deny it and raise the bar, simply because "there
is no evidence" is a fixed belief to them.

results, so their fixed logic goes). And they will argue that the
studies must be replicable. Then when you show them replicated studies
(e.g. Ganzfeld), they will raise the bar again
and argue it was not replicated enough times (until a debunker
disproves it is what they mean), ad infinitum. So no matter how many
stories or replicable research studies you cite, it's NEVER enough.

evidence is strictly confined to obscure sightings, think again. The famous Bentwaters UFO Incident that occurred on an American military base in England in 1980 involving two dozen military witnesses, including Colonel
Halt, of an up-close UFO sighting, remains an undebunked and compelling
case. And after years of extensive investigations and interviews with
Alien Abductees by Budd Hopkins and John Mack, who wrote books on the phenomenon, they concluded that there was more to the abduction experience than mere hallucination or sleep paralysis. In addition, public coalitions such as The Disclosure Project

Some examples of pseudoskeptics' denial of evidence and cognitive dissonance:
- If a psychic or medium gets an amazing hit,
either something highly unusual and specific that doesn't apply to
everyone or a deep dark secret about you that no one knows, which could
NOT have been due to cold reading or guessing, then it means nothing to
the pseudoskeptics, who will say that it must have been a lucky guess,
or due to fraud or your own faulty memory, because no one has psychic
abilities. - If witnesses experiences a ghost, they must
have been hallucinating, have an active imagination, or lying. Ghosts
don't exist, so it must have been something else. - If people see UFO's, including trained Air
Force Pilots and Astronauts, then they must have misidentified natural
phenomenon, because alien ships don't exist, at least not near Earth.
And this is so even if radar picked up objects performing maneuvers
impossible for man-made aircraft. - If psychic abilities are demonstrated under
controlled conditions (e.g. PEAR, Ganzfeld, SRI), then there must have
been flaws in the protocols or lack of controls, because psychic
abilities are not possible. Pseudo-skeptics then demand repeatability
and peer review. But when they get that, they then ask for more
repeatability, from skeptical scientists as well. The bar is
continually raised until a skeptical scientist finds or imagines any
flaw in the experiments and declares them debunked. Only then are they
satisfied. Clearly, they only want a particular result (only chance
results), not the truth. If it doesn't get debunked, then they accuse
the experimentors of improper controls or deceit, as Randi is infamous
for doing. - They claim that no psi study that shows
positive results has ever been published in credible scientific
journals. Yet when they are shown citations that they have, they simply
become deaf and ignore them. Then they have the nerve to simply repeat
their lie again, as if they never even heard you! This is very
infuriating and dishonest - If a resuscitated patient has an NDE or OBE
where he/she sees details that they could not have known about, then it
must have been lucky guesses or unconscious memories, because there is
no soul that can leave the body.. - Even if a non-paranormal claim simply
challenges the official story, it is denied and dismissed. For example,
all vast the evidence in the JFK Assassination pointing to more than one
gunman is automatically dismissed and denied, no matter how strong it
is, despite the fact that the House Select Committee on Assassinations
concluded back in the late 70's that "President Kennedy was probably
killed as a result of a conspiracy." Yet when some author publishes a
book supporting the lone assassin theory that distorts the facts, lies
and obfuscates the issues, the skeptics are quick to praise it without
any objective open review, for it supports their view. - Likewise, when thermite/thermate chemical
residues are found in the World Trade Center dust from 9/11 by
scientists through scientific means, which constitute hard forensic
evidence, the pseudoskeptics simply ignore it, because it goes against
the official 9/11 story therefore it can't exist. Or they look for ways
to explain it away, using even the most improbable assumptions. Even
when key witnesses at Ground Zero such as William Rodriguez testify that
they heard huge booming explosions coming from the BASEMENT level of
the World Trade Center Towers, and occured BEFORE the planes hit the
towers, totally contradicting the official story, they completely ignore
and censor it out of their heads. In fact, all the compelling evidence
presented by AE911Truth.org on their site and videos that makes sense
to open-minded people is completely ignored and dismissed because simply
put, if it contradicts the official version, then it must be false.
That is NOT skepticism, science or open-minded investigation at all,
period, but blind-fanaticism.

which misrepresented what SCEPCOP is about, labeling it "kooky" as
well. So when I tried to clear up her misunderstanding, she replied
that she just wanted to see evidence, that's all, insinuating that no
one so far had been able to give her any evidence for any paranormal or
psychic phenomena. She even wrote in her blog, "If SCEPCOP wants to be taken seriously, all they need to do is present some evidence for the paranormal."
This requirement was a sinch, so to get her informed me and other
SCEPCOP folks sent her a host of links, resources, books and videos with
the evidence she asked for. In response she became overwhelmed and
went to the JREF forum to ask how she can dismiss so much evidence being
directed at her, thus demonstrating that her true agenda was not that
of an open minded truth seeker, but of confirmation bias, seeking only
that which supported her belief, or disbelief, in anything paranormal,
regardless of facts or evidence. That was a bit deceptive of course, but

She later admitted that she had no interest

When It Comes To UFOs, Why Do Debunkers Do That Debunking Thing They Do?
I was asked today why I think UFO debunkers (and so-called UFO "skeptics" which really, are one and the same) do what they do. Why do they care so damn much about proving UFOs don't exist? (They've gotten lazy; they don't even bother. The subject isn't even worth their time to mock, much. But still, they have at it, as any journey into the JREF will reveal.)
After all these years, I still don't have an answer.
It's easy to say "Because they're afraid." No doubt that's true in many cases, at some level. At the same time, it's too simplistic and breezy a response; to dismiss their pathological denials with that answer. I used the example today, to my questioner, that, while I'm not a Christian (or a religious Jew or a Muslim, etc.) it's not because I'm "afraid." That's what many a believer of anything will say of the non-believer. "They're afraid." Somewhere in there these UFO deniers are afraid, I suppose, but there's more going on to their blind denials than just that.
Sometimes these crazy debunkers are paid shills. Sure that' s paranoid conspiracy talk, but we know what they say: "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not watching you..." Sometimes the debunkers are deeply invested in their egos and paychecks. If they're tenured, if they want to continue getting published by peer reviewed journals, if they want to move on up in the academic and scientific world, bashing the topic of UFOs is an easy way to ensure good standing. I suspect a good number of these debunker types have an idea that there really is something to UFOs, but... but... well, they just can't bring themselves to be honest. Too much at risk. Careers, salaries, reputations.
It's also intellectually easy. Who has the time to read all of Richard Dolan's books, or delve into Vallee, or the history of, say, the Contactee era (which is not over by the way.) Who has the time to be authentic and explore even just one aspect of the whole messy, complicated, rich, confusing world of UFOs? Easier to just say "UFOs?! Feh, man, don't waste my time!"
As my questioner earlier today said, "UFOs means Unidentified Flying Object." What's so threatening about that? I see something in the sky that's unidentifiable; what, we're supposed to ignore it?
Many a UFO I've seen I decided, after reflection, that they were probably man made objects and nothing to get much excited about. But some, well, some, remain mysterious indeed. And I'm not even beginning to talk aliens yet.
The Triangle
That giant triangle I saw years ago. FACT. Hey debunkers, still with me? So let's assume it's a human made object. Okay. We don't know if that's a FACT but it could be. Either way, the reality is: frighteningly huge triangle, low in the sky, blocking out stars, having physical effects upon human witnesses. (muffled sounds, sensation of slow motion, inertia.) Then, within the literal blink of an eye, it zooms off with incredible speed, all the while soundless. FACT.
Aliens, schmaliens, what the hell was that thing???!!! Aren't you curious? Aren't you interested in what our government is doing up there, scaring the hell out of citizens? If it isn't the government and/or private industry, that's worse in many ways for the skeptics, because that means: yes, aliens. Then of course we have the good old global industrial military complex, where private industry and government meet and make cozy bedfellows. They're doing whatever the hell they want to do with our taxes and the rest of us hoi poli be damned.
So either way, Debunker-ites, we have a mystery that needs to be addressed. Are you really so damn arrogant, so positive, there' s no there there? That it's all just weather balloons? After all these decades??!! Still?
Missing Time
I've had at least two episodes of missing time -- shared, with another person -- related to UFOs. That is huge, and I am still demanding answers. Who, or what, the hell took away hours of my life and my memory???!!! That's a supremely valid question and one that does not merit derision. Yet, the UFO skeptic blithely dismisses such topics with arrogant waves of their hands. They prefer to stoop to accusations of being emotionally needy, or prone to fantasy, or high, drunk, mentally ill, a liar, etc. We all know the drill by now.
Is It Because They Are Stupid?
Maybe the answer to the question is, simply, they're stupid. One can be highly intelligent in one area; say, a genius math professor, and be boringly, stupendously stupid in other areas. So the idea that our government -- any, and all governments -- are quite capable of crimes against their own citizenry doesn't occur to them. Or if it does, with surprising naivety, such FACTS (MK ULTRA, etc.) are dismissed as no longer germane. That was then, after all, nothing going on now. The idea that strange experiences happen to far more of us than we can imagine extends far beyond their comfort level. There has to be logic involved: dream states, and terms that satisfy like "confirmation bias" and "pareidolia" and such. And when those get used up; the old "we all want to believe in something ..." nonsense to appease those of us who've seen something. Who've experienced something.
The 'No Proof' Retort
So the UFO debunker says there's no proof aliens exist. The deceitful comment often made, that "When anyone says UFOs we know they really mean aliens from space" is thrown around with the intent of immediately trivializing any possible honest discussion. And while it's true no proof exists of aliens -- although we've come damn close and there is a positively and magnificently enormous amount of evidence -- the idea is not at all ridiculous. Mind games and semantic masturbations about "why would aliens come all the way to ..." and "aliens no doubt exist, waaaaaaaay out there, but not here..." are just more of the lazy, and dishonest, empty statements from the UFO debunker and skeptic.

Two Pilots That Went from UFO Debunkers to UFO Believers

in the chronology section of NICAP's 'UFO Evidence' report there's a
pretty fascinating UFO encounter from over Jackson, Alabama on November
14th, 1956 where a pilot and co-pilot both witnessed a 'brilliant
bluish-white light' perform highly unusual flight characteristics near
their aircraft.
The UFO's maneuvers were said to last for 30 seconds and described as 'rising and falling, darting back and forth, instant 90° turns, then hovering motionless again' - when the control tower radioed the aircraft the object began another series of 'crazy gyrations, lazy 8's, square chandelles with undulating motion' and then shot out over the Gulf of Mexico in a steep climb at 'fantastic speed'.
What makes this case all the more interesting (or 'splendidly ironic' as it mentions in this book) is the fact that the main witness pilot Captain W. J. Hull was a published anti-UFO skeptic who had already written a 'debunking' article in an Airline Pilot magazine three years before."...

Interview With Stanton Friedman - Debunking the Debunkers

Our next interview from the 2011 UFO Conference in Arizona features a fascinating conversation with Stanton Friedman, on the subject of "UFO Debunkers." Mr. Friedman is a nuclear physicist and one of the original civilian investigators of the Roswell incident. He is often credited for bringing the events in Roswell to popular awareness due to his research and and diligent fact-finding. There are few people in UFOology with longer resume than Stanton's nearly five decades of involvement. During that time, he's become frustrated with what he feels are errant arguments of habitual debunkers. He shares some of his thoughts on that subject and more.
NOTE: The first few minutes of this interview lack on-the scene video of Mr. Friedman. As our frustrations with the organization of the vent continued, our only opportunity to get a few moments of his time was at his table in the exhibit area. Our cameraman was jostled and bumped during the crowded first few minutes (as a lecture let out) making that portion of the video unwatchable. Also, lighting was not optimal. We apologize for the less-than ideal video quality, however, the content of the interview is excellent.
